Chapter Nineteen

“Andrea, would you mind staying with me tonight?” Natalie asked as they drove toward home.

She looked over and smiled. “I was going to suggest the same thing. The babies need to spend the first night in their new home. It’d be confusing otherwise.” They stopped by Andrea’s house. Natalie and her canine companions waited in the car as Andrea went in and fed her troops. She emerged a while later with an overnight bag. “I’ll stay as long as you need, sweetie,” Andrea assured her with a pat on the arm.

“The alarm will be installed tomorrow morning, and I have my buddies now.” Natalie reached over the seat and scratched both dogs behind the ears. “I won’t be afraid.”

When they arrived at Natalie’s place, they let both dogs run around the yard to sniff, and in Harley’s case, pee all over everything. Both responded immediately when Natalie called and followed her into the house. They sniffed everything in there, too, and to Natalie’s delight, nothing was marked. She took the tags off their beds and laid them in her room as Andrea poured their dinner and water into bowls.

“You need a fence, baby,” Andrea said when Natalie came back into the kitchen. “These pups will need to go out anytime they eat. I don’t like the idea of you being in the yard alone at night even when they’re with you.”

Natalie sighed as she began to whip up something for her and Andrea to eat. One problem solved and another crops up, she thought. At this rate, she’d have work crews in her house and yard for a month. “Jot ‘fence’ on my to-do list and I’ll call tomorrow.”

Andrea made the notation, then prepared to take the dogs out. Natalie went with her and watched as they ran through the deep lot almost to the woods to do their business. Andrea looked around, then back at Natalie. “I never really noticed how secluded it was out here and how dark. You may want to consider having Terry install a few motion lights.”

“She’s already offered. I hope she’s still talking to me after Ducote gets a hold of her. He asked me for the names and addresses of all my friends.”

“She’ll understand.” Andrea wrapped her sweater tighter. “She seems like a decent kid. She’ll probably be just as worried as I was.”

Natalie hoped so. She liked Lyn and Terry, even though they were opposites and seemed to grate on each other’s nerves. Lyn was pretty and sweet; Natalie could see herself dating her. And then there was Terry—mysterious in a way, and those eyes, how they stirred something within her.

Andrea whistled for the dogs and both came running. She petted and praised before turning to Natalie. “Love on them when they come to you.”

Natalie knelt and scratched Harley behind his ears. He seemed satisfied with the amount of affection that she doled out and followed Andrea to the door. Paisley looked at her for a moment, then moved in. She stuck her nose under Natalie’s arm and moved close to her body.
